. . . BackWest formed in late 2016 and in March 2017 the band released their debut album entitled The Long Walk. In a review done by Irish Music Magazine it labeled their album as “A debut on fire” praising them for their diversity in performance and synergy of style. Gordon Potter of The Living Tradition describes their debut as “Definitely one of the top albums of this or any year”. There is no question that this band has made waves on the live circuit in more ways than one.
Two musical siblings are joined by lead guitar/vocalist and percussion giving this ensemble it’s own unique brand. Their vast repertoire celebrates the best essence of traditional Irish music and song. All Ireland Champion sibling duet on fiddle and button accordion, Maureen and Brendan Browne are the lead instrumentalists of BackWest and fluent Irish speakers. This powerhouse duo are joined by world renowned artists such as Fabian Joyce (guitar/vocalist), Shane McGowan (guitar/vocalist), Seamie O’Dowd (guitar/vocalist), Yvonne Fahy (percussion), Donnacha Gough (percussion) and Steve Morrow (percussion) but to name a few. The band is well known for expanding to a five piece ensemble along with collaborating with various artists within many realms of the Celtic music world.
Described by fRoots magazine as “The icing on the cake” with “razor-sharp precision” and “a state-of-the-art-performance” this powerful melodic ensemble of fiddle and box is driven by the percussive nature of the accompaniment, which in turn delivers Irish traditional music and song to audiences in a highly unique fashion. Their performances are vibrant, energetic and yet foster the organic nature of their home traditions and heritages. It is without question that they leave their audiences with the warmth of wanting more.
